SILVERTON, Ore. — Nine new firefighters from three Marion County fire districts were celebrated at a graduation ceremony at the Silverton Fire District on April 26, 2025, marking the completion of their rigorous training to serve their communities.

The ceremony recognized graduates from Silverton Fire District, Monitor Fire and Rescue, and Drakes Crossing Fire District. Bill Miles, Silverton Chief at Silverton Fire District, opened the ceremony by acknowledging the training staff. “Before we get started, I want to express my sincere appreciation to the instructors, staff, and mentors who poured their time and expertise into these individuals, preparing them for the challenging and rewarding work they’re about to embark,” Miles said.

The event, attended by families, friends, and local officials, featured badge presentations and showcased unity among the districts. The Silverton Fire District, serving 106 square miles since 1883, hosted the ceremony, reinforcing its role as a regional leader in fire and emergency services.

Brandon Hamilton, Fire Chief of Drakes Crossing Fire District, emphasized the values of the fire service. “By volunteering your time and services to help protect your community as a firefighter, you’ll be looked upon to help someone perhaps in the worst time of their lives,” Hamilton said. He highlighted trust and integrity, noting, “By your sheer association with the fire service, you are immediately given a significant amount of trust from the community. … Do not do something stupid to lose this trust, ‘cause once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

William Nightingale, Fire Chief of Monitor Fire District, spoke vividly about the challenges firefighters face. “As others run out, you go in,” Nightingale said, describing an intense scene: “In a scary dark with the heat searing your ears, you’re gouging out and tearing loose and pulling apart, groping air and tasting black, your windpipe is closing, and you’ve lost track of which way is out.”

Lieutenant Dan Brown, Silverton Fire District Training Coordinator, highlighted the youth of three graduates still in high school: Lillie Peterson and Trevor Redman-Brown from Silverton Fire District, and Jordan Drescher from Monitor Fire and Rescue. Their achievement underscored the program’s success in engaging young volunteers.

Graduates completed months of training in fire suppression, emergency medical response, and teamwork, preparing them to serve across Silverton, Monitor, and Drakes Crossing. Congratulations to the newly graduated firefighters who will serve the Silverton community and surrounding areas.
