Derek is an independent journalist based in Silverton, Oregon, and the publisher of Silverton Independent.
He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy before earning a master’s degree in journalism from Full Sail University. Later, he spent two and a half years as a reporter/photographer with the Itemizer-Observer, covering local government, education, and community issues in the region.
Today, he works as an independent journalist while also serving as a substitute teacher for the Mount Angel and Silver Falls school districts. Silverton Independent is a platform for reporting local news with an independent voice, focused solely on Silverton and the people who live here.
My goal is straightforward: deliver clear, fair, and independent coverage of the stories that matter to this community.
