SILVERTON, Ore. — The Silverton Police Department is asking for the public’s help in investigating a series of vandalism incidents in the downtown core, where tagging and property damage have frustrated local businesses and residents.

The spree began early Friday morning with the first reported incident. The most recent act of vandalism occurred on March 21, 2025, from 2:15 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. These early-morning attacks have targeted properties in the heart of Silverton, disrupting the charm and safety of the community. The Silverton Inn, a European-style boutique hotel in the downtown historic district, was among the businesses hit. The inn’s large storefront windows were defaced with white spray paint, with the tag “X13” scrawled across the glass.

The Silverton Inn & Suites, known for its unique rooms reflecting Silverton’s history and its on-site Magnolia Grill Restaurant, is a cornerstone of the downtown area, attracting both locals and tourists. The vandalism mars the inn’s inviting atmosphere and poses a financial burden for repairs, a significant blow to a business that offers a charming experience in what’s known as Oregon’s Garden City.

“We’re committed to holding those responsible accountable,” the Silverton Police Department said in a statement. The department is urging anyone with security cameras in the downtown area to check footage from the specified times and share anything that might help the investigation. Tips can be submitted to PolicePIO@Silverton.or.us or by calling 503-873-5326, Option 1.

Vandalism may seem minor to some, but police note it’s a crime with serious consequences. Offenders could face charges including criminal mischief, trespassing, disorderly conduct and more — especially if multiple incidents are linked to the same culprits.

For Silverton’s business community, the impact is immediate. Damaged storefronts and defaced properties cost money to repair and detract from the welcoming atmosphere downtown Silverton is known for. The “X13” tag on The Silverton Inn’s windows, as seen in the photo, highlights the challenges local merchants face — Cars in the parking lot were also vandalized, including one belonging to a dance team coach from out of town staying at the inn, showing how the incidents affect visitors as well.

Police are encouraging business owners to review exterior security camera footage and, for those without cameras, to consider installing them. “They can be a helpful tool not just for your own property but for the whole neighborhood,” the department said.

In response, Silverton police are increasing patrols in the downtown area during early morning hours. Officers are on duty 24/7 but need the community’s help. “If you see anything suspicious, no matter how small it may seem, please say something,” the department said. “Your eyes and awareness can make a big difference.”

“Silverton PD is committed to keeping our city safe, clean and welcoming,” the statement added. “Let’s continue to work together to protect and support our community.” As the investigation continues, the hope is that these acts of vandalism will be a brief blemish on an otherwise vibrant downtown — and that with the public’s help, those responsible will be stopped.
